First letter to Sophia

Dear Sophia:

This is the first letter I wrote to you. Now you are 11 weeks old. In the past 2 and half month, you changed a lot.

After the first moment I hold you in my arm when you were born, we separated for 24 hours. You were in Neonatal Intensive Care unit for 2 days and I was in the observation room for one day. I fell in love with you from the first moment I hold you. The first night you were on the earth, I couldn’t sleep while I was in the observation room. I thought about you all night. The second time I saw you, I tried to nursing you while I was in the wheel chair. The third time I saw you, it was in the night around 2am after I moved out of the observation room. I couldn’t sleep. I went to the intensive care unit again. I just wanted to hold you. From that night on, I hold and nursed you every night.

You were born on Monday. We left hospital for home on Friday noon time. When we got home, I tried to nursing you. It took us one hour for the first time. I was very frustrated that I couldn’t provide enough milk for you. I send your father to buy the breast pump right away. When you were born, we had just moved to the new apartment for 3 weeks. A lot of stuff had not been settled at that time. We lived in the second bed room for the beginning. You spend the first couple nights in the bugaboo’s basinet. Your first doctor’s check up was in one week after you were home. You lost 7 oz weight. Doctor said that I should let you suck me all the time. From that day, I stopped using breast pump. One week later, we check up with doctor again. You gained back your birth weight. I was assured that we were in the right track.

From second week, we moved to the master bedroom together. Every night, we put you in your crib to sleep. After the mid night I nursed you, I kept you sleeping with me on the big bed. Every morning when you wake up, you look at me and smile. You are such a sweat baby.

From the third week, your unbiblical cord fell off. I started to give you bath. You like take bath. At the beginning our nanny aunty Chiang gave mommy a lot of help. She showed me how to give you a bath. Before that, I did rubbing bath for you every morning.

On the fifth week, you grandmother from your father’s side visit us. She companied you and me to the first month check up. We took you to an Austrian restaurant. It was your first restaurant experience. The guest on the other table kept looking at you. You were a little star. Your grandma brought you a lot of gifts. She bought you the cloth from new born to one year old. When she left, she held you and cried. It’s so sad to be parting from you.

For the first five weeks, you and I spend every minute together. Your grand parents (my mother and father) came to join me and your dad to take care of you at the beginning of the sixth week. With their help to take care of you, mommy finally got some sleep in the morning. I also can walk out to do some grocery shopping. Your grand parents showered you with their love. They have great patient with you. They kept talk to you. Your grandma often sings you to sleep.

On the seventh week, you had two adventures. First I took you a mommy and baby yoga class. During the class you were very cool and quiet. Everyone amazed that you can handle the new environment so easily. They didn’t believe that you were only six week and 3 days at that time. Second we took you ride subway to Manhattan Chinatown for Dim Sum. You also handled very well.

On the eighth week, it was the Memorial Day weekend. Mommy’s birthday was right after that. Your father took two days off. We took you and your grand parents to Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

On the ninth week, there were two big things. You got the first immunization shots during your second month check up and I took you to my office. You handle the immunization shots very well. You didn’t have any fever afterward. You were very cool and friendly to face many new people in my office. And you pooped in front of all my coworker. Mom was unprepared. I didn’t bring diaper and changing cloth for you. Luckily there is a day care center in my office building. I borrowed the diaper and cleaned you in the day care center. From that week, you can lift your head off the floor while you lay on your belly. For two month old baby, it was advance.

On the tenth week, I started to work again. It was only two days a week. I missed you a lot. When I got back from work, I hold you for an hour. I was attached to you. On the Friday of the tenth week, you got cold the first time. I was so worried that I have to take you to see doctor right away. So far you are being a healthy baby. I hope you got well soon. I learned to give you steam bath. You like it a lot. That weekend, you went to a street fair at you first time.

Yesterday, we took you to visit your father’s office. When you faced his coworker, you cried very loud. You never cried that loud before. We guess that you start recognize and afraid of strange people. That was another mile stone for your mental development. After that office visiting, I took you to MOMA. Although we only had a short visit, I’m sure I will take you there many many times in the future.

Ok, right now I just report to you what you’ve been experienced in the first 11 weeks. I will write to you in the next month. Have a good sleep now.

Kiss,

Mommy

Week 106: Daddy put Sophia to sleep

This week there is a big change in Sophia's sleeping routine. From Wednesday Oliver put Sophia to bed. He didn't talk to her much. Let her read book and advice her to lay on bed do her reading. First night Sophia fell sleep while she hold her book. Second night she was about to sleep and Oliver walk out of her room and turn off the light. The third night, he walked out of the room when she still reading her book. 2 minutes later, she drop the book we asked her if it's ok we turn off the light. She knocked her head and we turn off the light while she still looking at us. It was 4 nights in the roll that she was peacefully fell in sleep without crying. Oliver was very proud of his achievement. I was very happy that she became a big girl and I don't need to deal with the crying when we turn off the light. It was a big change since she turn two. She is easier to get reasoned and modify her behavior.

Sophia was so bored at the end, she "called" Michelle couple time to ask Michael come over to play. So at the end we got Michael came over they had really good time. They play together very well and I don't need involve with them that much. It's do good that they became more independent.

Week 105: 2 Year Old!

On Wednesday Sophia turned two year old. Same as last year, we took a day off and though a party for her at home. We had twins, Michael, Drew and Carly and Sebi came over to play. Nanny was with her as well. Sophia dressed in a red Chinese dress that YeYe, NaiNai bought for her from Beijing. She had a good time.
Friday I took her to see pediatrician for her check up. She was 29.6 pound and 35.5 inch high. Doctor said she developed quiet well.

Saturday we had another birthday party for her. This time we invited all Chinese baby. Christen, Reece, Erica, Isaac, and Jeremy. This time because there are more boys in the party. Much more toys were scattered everywhere. It was fun to see Diane ( Erica's mom) again.

Sunday was Easter. We played egg hunting game at home. (outside was very cold. It has snow in the afternoon) We cleaned our home while we did the egg hunting game. I can not believe that two year has past so fast...

Week 104: Busy and fun weekend

This weekend I gave Sophia all the 4T size dress. It was perfect. I have a feeling that if she didn't wear them now it will be too small in the fall season.

This week is the last week of Sophia in one year old.

Saturday we took Sophia to swimming class as usual. Oliver took her to swimming pool. She didn't cooperative with him. She actually left the class earlier than anyone else. Afternoon I prepared food and she played with dolls. She first gave Baby doll Mary a bath. She went to the bathroom found the Shampoo and powder for the doll. She did everything I did to her. She played the bath baby for almost an hour. I was amazed that she can enjoy play by herself for a long time.

Sunday Sophia didn't have her music class. 10:30 am we took her to Brooklyn Botanic Garden for a walk. We had a little early lunch in the cafeteria. She run around in the three green houses. Sometime she stopped running and smell the flower. When I took her out of the green house she really don't want to go... We took her to prospect park boat house. There they have a Easter egg craft class. I made two egg necklace for Sophia and her friend Michael. She fell sleep when we walk home around 1:45pm. 4:00 pm Sophia waked up from her nape, her play date Jeremy arrived with his mom Swan. 6:20 pm when Jeremy left, Michael's mom called and Sophia went to her apartment to play with Michael. I had dinner with Oliver for 2 hours. Sophia had a none stop fun for the full day!

Week 103: Playground hopping and squirrel

Last weekend Sophia did all the typical activities for the weekend as a toddler in park slope. Saturday we started with gym/swimming class, nap, lunch, afternoon playground near 11th street, B&N bookstore and snacks. We run into two families for all those locations. Sunday music class, followed with lunch and play at home. While she took a nap in the stroller we took her to boat house for a afternoon coffee, walked around Leffert Garden, she waked up and played in a playground near boathouse, followed to another play ground near 3rd street. We met Swan and Jeremy at the 3rd street playground. There we saw an amazing squirrel climbed into Sophia's diaper bag and looked for food. When Oliver walked over to the stroller, the squirrel hided inside of the diaper bag and only jumped out when Oliver real close to him. Every laugh about it.

Week 102: Children's Museum of Manhattan

This week's weather was very strange. Monday was very warm and I took Sophia to our back yard to play after I got back from work. ( because of the one hour time change. The day was still bright for her to play at 6:30pm). Tuesday we stopped by Drew and Carlyle's home at 1D. They have very fancy toys and Sophia enjoyed to play with them. I chatted with Sara about PS 107 preK program. Apparently we won't get in because they only have one class. But for Kindergarten we might get a chance. Wednesday it's getting cold and we played at Michael's place. Thursday and Friday was bad rainy snow day. Michael came to play with us. On Saturday the snow piled everywhere, we couldn't get our stroller out more than one block. We didn't go for the swimming class and music class. Jeremy's mom offer to take Sophia and me to Children's museum in Manhattan. That was a fun place. We only explored the third floor for about two hours. Sophia and Jeremy really don't want to leave. Somehow Sophia sensed that Daddy didn't go with us. During lunch time she asked me for Daddy. I said we will go home to see daddy. She told me that she want to go home to see daddy. I feel she is getting more sensitive to social environment.

Mar. 11th, It was the day light saving time change day. To get Sophia adjust to the new time. I took Sophia out to play from 2 Pm to 9 pm. She first slept an hour. Then we went to B&N and she was very happy to play there for 2 hrs. When we went to Starbucks to have some snack. Oliver came join us. When we walk pass the Berkley Carroll. I told her" this is your school". She said" my school, let me in". She seams can not wait to go to school.. When we were in the play ground it was already late. We tried to get her leave play ground and she holed a play ground pole and resist. Then she saw a 2 year old girl run in front of her. They start to say hi to each other and then hugged. Apparently they both want to play and not go home. After dinner we went home. She fall on bed without any trouble.. Too tired.

I just found out that Rosie's mom is half Chinese.

This weekend was Chinese New Year. On Saturday I dressed Sophia in a silk red Chinese traditions jacket. We had web conference with Grandparents in China. Sophia loves her Chinese cloth so much she couldn't sleep and refuse to take tit off for taking shower.

We had a baby Chinese New Year party at home on Saturday. To decorated our place I bout two lantern and window décor from Chinatown. Totally 4 Chinese mom came with 5 babies. Each baby got a red envelop. I made dumpling and steam fish. Sophia was very fascinated about a 3 month old baby. I was very tired to prepare the party food and organize everything.

On Sunday we went to Sue and Richard's home for another party. There Sophia played with 2 4 year old kids. She was much happy to play with them and their toys. At Sue's place we met a Chinese Children psychologist. She opened a Chinese reading garden in Midtown. We were invited to go visit them.

Week 97: Montessori playgroup interview

This Thursday Sophia had her first playgroup interview with Montessori international school.

To prepare the interview, I took Sophia to office daycare on Monday. It was the coldest day in a year. It was very tough to get her there for both of us. In daycare she had a lots of fun. Because the toddler's group was small and all other babies were younger than her. I took her to preschool kids group. She played with 5,6 year old girls and really like it.

At Montessori, she was much better than other interviewed babies. She enjoyed the whole program. She even went to their music class without us to company. (that was the school policy). One little draw back was that when we leave the Montessori, one grandparent told us this school was not good and let children cry. We felt bad about it. I took 1 day off for Sophia's interview. In the afternoon Sophia went to her nanny's place. I use the time to assembled her new toddler bed. From that night she sleeps on her own bed. No more crib!

Saturday I didn't take Sophia to swim. We took her to Guggenheim Museum instead. She slept most of time when we were in the museum. We had our Chinese play date afterward at Swan's place.

Week 96: Daddy is cute

Last weekend I helped Oliver to fix a button on his coat. After I fix it, I asked Oliver to try it on. Sophia looked at her daddy and said: Daddy is cute...

Over the weekend Sophia had another Chinese play date with a 18 month old boy Jeremy. His mom Swan came from Taiwan. She was very impressed by my toy collection. We will try to keep a Saturday afternoon play date with Jeremy as much as we can.

Week 95: Stokke Chair and Dining table

We got a small round dining table delivered on Jan 20th. With a new red stokke chair, Sophia can sit with us for a formal dining at home. We got the idea to eat together regularly from New year eve dinner at home. She sat there nicely eat ice cream by herself. With stokke chair she can get on and off the chair on her own. This past Saturday we had dinner together at home. Sophia ate a lot of pasta with little help from daddy and mommy. We decided to have at least twice a week this kind of eat together. Yesterday we were having lunch in Chinatown. Sophia tried to use chopstick and managed to get couple noodles into her mouth. More eating training on the way...

Week 94: Serious Cold and Chinese play group

Last week the weather suddenly got cold and Sophia had running nose after swimming class. Over the week she got more and more sick. She had suffy nose and can not breath well. Tuesday night Oliver accidentally gave her strong dosage of Tylonor. The next day she felt better but I was afraid to give her medicing. By Thursday she got so sick that nanny called me and asked to take her to see doctor. We took her to see doctor at 6:30pm that night. After taking new medicine she was getting better. But the side effect of the medicine made her not sleeping during the day. She ends up falling sleep when she got beck from nanny's place. Over the weekend we didn't take her to swimming class. We played twice with Michael over the weekend.

On Tuesday we had our first Chinese speaking play group with other two moms at the brooklyn public library. The other two moms are ABC. We all want to have our baby expose to Chinese. This is a good beginning. I also met another CHinese woman from Taiwan and we will meet next weekend.
